The politically aware sandwich
I love it. Yesterday I found a cafe in Horsham that has “Anti Pesto” foccaccias on the menu. I love a sandwich with strong beliefs. Down with basil and pinenuts!

Jerry Seinfeld would love this cafe - he’s got a real bee in his bonnet about pesto. Personally i can’t get enough of the stuff, especially a realy good home made one. Possibly one of the best culinary experiences of my life was a baguette i ate at a cafe in Amsterdam about 10 years ago. It was a perfect baguette, warm, with fresh ripe tomatoes, succulent mozarella cheese (not that strange rubbery yellow stuff you buy in supermarkets, the real thing)and i was enjoying it so much that i didn’t want to put it down on my plate to pick up my napkin. I ate it in one frenzied go and by the time i finished the pesto sauce had dripped down my arms nearly as far as my elbows! Then, after cleaning myself up, i ordered another. To my devastation i was told that the kitchen was closed. This necessitated another trip to the same cafe the following day - needless to say, the joint i smoked that made the sandwish taste even better, also made the cafe extremely difficult to find. But it was worth the trouble.

Oh yeah, I’m right there with you about chasing that memorable food while overseas. I once changed hotels in Italy to be closer to a particular gelati shop. Mmmm… gelati…
