My Dream Kitchen

Kitchen

O and I are in the process of renovating our house, and this includes a whole new kitchen and living area. I’ve been working on the kitchen design in my head for ages, but it’s getting close to crunch time and we need to pick a kitchen and lock down a plan.

Some things I’ve included in the design are:

  • A hole in the kitchen bench with a chute to a small bin underneath so I can collect kitchen scraps for the compost bin outside.
  • A big hanging pot rack over the bench.
  • A portion of the benchtop in stone for rolling pastry.
  • An appliance cupboard for the glorious Kitchen Aid mixer.
  • One of those beautiful big enamel French provincial trough sinks.
  • Drawers for pots and pans, instead of cupboards.
  • A walk in pantry. (This should be number 1 on the list. I’ve always wanted one of these).
  • Plate racks for storing platters.

So I thought I’d ask all the food lovers out there what you like most about your kitchen?

I don’t have a lot of love for my current kitchen. It is short on bench space which is a pet hate. While we’re dreaming though I’d have to say marble counter tops to keep pastry cool during preparations, a butchers bench for extra space and a double oven are on my wish list!

    Lady Lou,

You have been telling me about the importance of having a pot filling tap over the oven for ages… Yet you omit it from your list.

I can see you standing over it now “Pasta needs to swim Stuart…”

    Natural light.

Like Truffle, I don’t have much love for the kitchen we have in the crappy little company house we currently live in but… I love love love my REAL kitchen at home. I especially love the walk in pantry, the extra deep cupboards (and therefore, benches) and it’s country kitchen clean lines and prettiness. The only thing I would change is my oven as it’s way too little, and in a stupid spot.

Love my oven at waist height - no crouching to get at it, and less chance of burnt curious little fingers. Nice high benches (I’m 6′2″). Pull out pantry. Part of our living space, which is great (because I live in the kitchen anyway), but lethal for the serial snacker that I am.
Major bad point is the lack of space - probably no more that two or three square metres of floor space (sacrificed for wide benches).

Delurking to talk about myself, but I do love your blog. :-)

pull out draws in cupboars changed my life. If you go to a regular cabinet maker or somewhere like harvie Norman renovations they cost a fortune. A lot of people don’t realise most of these people supply exactly the same product as Ikea, it is just that Ikea has standardised sizes. So I was able to afford the draws, concrete benchtops a Qasair air extrator (they really are the best thing ever) and exotc taps by gong for Ikea - the total cost of the units and draws was about what other cabinet makers quoted for installing just the draw thingies. Oh yeah, and concrete benchtops take dedication to maintain.

Big shelf around the top of my kitchen to hold all the glassware, cake plates I collect. OH, and don’t forget a cupboard for your broom.

Good luck! I laid my own tile on our kitchen reno!

Lovely kitchen, I’d say that is a wow! The best kitchen is one that has all of your personal needs and desires designed in, the perfect combination of aesthetics and function. In my own kitchen, I am happiest with a large pantry!

I second the pull out drawers for plates, pots etc. I also love having a bookshelf in easy reach for my cookbooks. Things I wished I’d had - a trap door for a below floor wine cellar (nice and cool), an industrial strength range hood, lighting underneath the cupboards that overhang the bench.

I third the pull out drawers for things. We converted a cupboard that had tons of wasted space into three pull out drawers and I love it love it love it!! Another feature I love is that we have an electrical strip built in on our center island, and one built in above our longest counter. It is incredibly convenient, especially on the island where I do all my mixing. We get tons of natural light too, which is wonderful and we installed an exhaust fan to pull out nasty cooking odors. One corner counter was a bit dark, so we installed a light under the cabinet to make it more hospitable.
